A holiday rental marketplace has created a calculator to allow Brits to determine if they can travel between various regions in the UK and what guidelines they should follow, with regional protocols yielding 64 possible outcomes, depending on location and destination. The calculator was launched after Google data revealed that searches for “can I travel” hit a 12-month high following the announcement of various tiers in the first week of December, demonstrating a widespread confusion amongst the public.

A leading holiday rental marketplace has created a calculator for Brits to determine if they can travel between various regions in the UK.

The calculator has been created by Snaptrip.com, which decided to create the tool after experiencing a surge in tier travel related enquiries that now account for 15% of phone calls, in addition to Google trend search data that revealed a large spike in searches related to traveling between tiers in the first week of December.

The simple tool allows UK residents to easily determine if they can go ahead with their travel plans by entering their current location and desired destination. The tool will then tell them if they are allowed to travel between these two places and what the restrictions will be in the destination region.

View and use the tool.

After analysing search trends for the last twelve months in the United Kingdom, Snaptrip.com discovered that interest for the phrase “Can I travel...” spiked between the 29th November and4th December. This spike came as the Government announced the new tiers that English residents found themselves in following the month-long November lockdown.

Currently there are different systems in place across England, Wales and Scotland. England has a three-tier system and Scotland has a four-tier system, while Wales does not currently have a tiered system. These eight different restriction levels result in a total of 64 different possibilities for Brits when considering if they are allowed to travel to another region in the country.

Matt Fox, CEO and co-founder of Snaptrip.com, said,

“The travel industry has faced major disruption throughout 2020, from the initial lockdown inMarch to the tiered lockdown we are in now with various setbacks along the way. After all this, we would hate for anyone to miss out on a trip because of tier confusion, or inadvertently go ahead with a trip they shouldn’t be going on.

“We thought that by creating this quick tool we would be giving everyone an easy way to determine whether they can go ahead with their plans or not with a few simple clicks, whether those plans involve visiting family or enjoying a remote and romantic winter getaway in the countryside.”
